The World’s First University

"Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him."
Sahih Muslim 2699, Book 48, Hadith 1

A Moroccan Legacy Founded by a Pious Woman

When we reflect upon the blessings of knowledge, we are reminded of the Qur’anic verse: "Say, are those who know equal to those who do not know?" (Surah Az-Zumar 39:9). Indeed, the pursuit of knowledge holds a revered place in Islam, and Morocco is home to a profound testament to this legacy — the University of al-Qarawiyyin. Established in 859 AD (241 AH) in the bustling city of Fes, this institution is recognised as the world’s first university. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it was founded by a pious and visionary woman, Fatima al-Fihri (فاطمة بنت محمد الفهرية القرشية‎).

The Birth of a Timeless Institution

Fatima al-Fihri, a woman of great faith and generosity, used the wealth she inherited to build a house of learning dedicated to the betterment of her community. Her intention was sincere: to create a sanctuary where knowledge could thrive and benefit both her contemporaries and future generations. This noble endeavour began as a madrasah (Islamic school), but under Allah’s guidance, it grew into a center of excellence where scholars gathered to study:

  • Islamic Sciences: Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith studies, and various schools of Islamic jurisprudence
  • Natural Sciences: Medicine, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Mathematics
  • Linguistics: Arabic grammar, literature, and rhetoric
  • Social Sciences: History, geography, and sociology
  • Applied Sciences: Architecture, engineering, and crafts

This institution, guided by Islamic principles, became a beacon of light for the entire world. Scholars from across the Islamic world and beyond traveled to al-Qarawiyyin, contributing to a rich exchange of knowledge that continues to inspire us today.

The complex she designed included a grand library that would eventually house over 4,000 manuscripts, including the earliest collection of ḣadith of Imam Malik, "Al-Muwatta," written on gazelle parchment. The university's courtyard featured a remarkable water clock, designed by Ibn al-Saffar, which not only kept time but also helped coordinate prayer schedules.

Recognition in Modern Times

The enduring legacy of the University of al-Qarawiyyin has been acknowledged globally. Recognised by Guinness World Records and UNESCO, it stands as a timeless symbol of the profound connection between faith and learning. It reminds us of the vital role women have played in shaping our history and the immense barakah (blessing) that comes with sincere intentions for the sake of Allah.
